The Sport Performance Program Expanded Collection is a self-paced, online program comprised of individual courses. Whether you choose to take just one course or enroll in multiple courses at a time, your education is entirely up to you.

Course fees include all required course materials and exams, as well as access to one-on-one instruction via e-mail or phone.


To successfully complete a course, you must:

Complete the required reading

Engage in sport activities

Take the self-administered final exam

Submit your test by the submission deadlines

Complete all requirements within one year of enrollment


Each course is worth two semester units. The total number of graduate credits you receive will depend on the number of courses you complete.

KIN 850: Youth Sport Matters
This course will bring critical sociological analyses to cultural issues surrounding youth sport. The course is built on the assumption that youth sport is an important location to more deeply understand more expansive social issues and tensions. Particular attention will be paid to the ways in which various social relationships and inequalities are simultaneously sustained and disrupted in a youth sport setting.
KIN 851: Hot Topics in Exercise Training and Performance
This course examines hot topics in exercise training and performance. Topics include current research findings and insights on the role of: nutrition and performance, protein and carbohydrate ingestion/supplementation in exercise and performance, hydration and performance, high intensity interval training to enhance endurance performance, training the gut for performance, speeding recovery from exercise, training the core for enhanced performance, prevention and treatment of delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS), ergogenic aids for enhanced training and performance, diabetes and competition, and environmental issues and performance.
KIN 852: Peak Experiences in Sport
This course examines special experiences reported by athletes as part of their sport participation to occur during certain sport performances. Included are notions of the "Zone", altered states of consciousness, spiritual connections, and "Flow" in sport. The course explores the nature of these subjective (personal and group) experiences and some of the psychological and metaphysical explanations discussed in the professional literature.
KIN 853: Get Moving!
Integrating Physical Activity in Schools Recent research indicates that poor diet and lack of physical activity are increasingly important factors in the development of childhood obesity. This course provides teachers and administrators with ideas for integrating physical activity across the curriculum and creating effective school wellness programs.
KIN 854: Hello Exercise, Goodbye Stress: the Physiological Benefits of Exercise
When we are stressed, what hormonal and physiological changes occur? How do these changes impact our health? This course provides an in-depth understanding of the physiological responses to stress. We will examine the potentially deleterious effects of stress related diseases and review literature regarding the benefits of exercise in mitigating these effects.
KIN 855: Mind Over Matter: Mental Skills for Olympic Performance
This course examines mental skills developed by high performance athletes such as participants in the Winter Games. Discover how research and theory in sport psychology are put into practice with athletes, coaches, and teams. Many principles and techniques used with elite athletes can be applied to youth, recreational sport, and other achievement activities. Explore how these concepts are employed by actual athletes/coaches (observed through the media), and how they can be applied in your own coaching or teaching.
KIN 856: Modern Olympics: Political Games
Analyze the Modern Olympics as a globally significant political and commercial event. Explore the political processes of the modern Games, how they are organized and produced, and the social consequences of these processes. Learn how the televised broadcast impacts ideas of nationality, race, gender, age, and (dis)ability.
KIN 857: Understanding Sport Nutrition, what Should I Eat?
Understanding the Science Behind Nutrition Sport nutrition is the practice of consuming nutrients to improve sport performance. While some individuals are involved in competitive physical activity, and others are concerned with improving their body composition, strength, cardiovascular endurance, or general fitness level-the same general nutrition principles apply to both. This course examines how food and sport supplements interact with the body's biological functions to affect exercise and sport performance.
KIN 858: Effectively Integrating Fitness Education Into Physical Education
This course provides physical education teachers and movement education personnel with ideas for effectively integrating health-related fitness and activity into quality physical education programs at the kindergarten through twelfth grade levels. Additionally, this course will instruct on the use of fitness testing as an educational and motivational tool encouraging lifelong physical activity participation.
KIN 859: Explanations for Everyday Occurrences in Sport and Life
What are spoonerisms and how can they be explained? Was John McEnroe really a brat or did he have preconceived intent when he berated umpires? Wayne Gretzky was one of the greatest hockey players of all time, but some believe his individual skills were only average. Why was he so great? This course will examine the research in motor learning and control that can help explain the above as well as answer many questions related to sporting events and movement activities in everyday life. Students will examine issues on perception, decision making, attention, and skill learning,development, and retention.
KIN 860: Developing Skill in Sport & Physical Activities
This course examines scientific principles behind the development of skill in sport and other physical activities, and explores practical applications in contemporary training of athletes and physical performers. Following current research evidence and the practice of sport science professionals, this course provides information that teachers, coaches, and parents can apply to improve skill practice at all levels of expertise. Practical coaching tips are surveyed that facilitate learning, decision-making, concentration, and performance skills in beginners to elite performers.
KIN 861: Do You Live in an Environment that Promotes Obesity?
Gain a greater understanding of the issues that underlie the current obesity epidemic. Explore the influences of: family and culture; access to resources and transportation systems; public policy; and the media on individual health behavior. This course provides physical education teachers and movement education personnel from Kindergarten through 12th grade with a broader knowledge of obesity, and offers tools for practitioners to address the epidemic within their communities.
KIN 862: Myths & Truths in Youth Sport Coaching
Utilizing current research evidence and the practice of sport science professionals, this course provides the scientific evidence that contradicts commonly held sport coaching myths. Teachers, coaches, and parents can apply information from the course to improve their coaching practices and facilitate learning, performance, enjoyment, and developmental outcomes for all in youth sport.
KIN 870: The Mechanics of Flying-The Science of Swimming Faster
This course will blend the scientific insights that affect performance with practical application in order to help students better understand the mechanics of swimming. Topics will include fluid mechanics, stroke analysis, injury prevention and strength, and conditioning training.
KIN 871: “We Need To Move Forward As A City": Contemporary Issues In Sport Mega Events
Sport mega-events such as the FIFA World Cup and the UEFA Champions League are presented in terms of their spectacular pageantry, athletic excellence, and global harmony. Yet, they also raise concerns about human rights, social benefit, and inclusion. Students will thus examine sport mega events in order to understand how they impact citizens in host nations and cities.
KIN 872: Running Mechanics and Gait Analysis
Health care professionals, coaches and runners should understand the multifactorial nature of running injuries in order to prevent and optimally treat injuries.  This course will blend the scientific insights that affect performance as well as an in-depth assessment of foot, knee and hip mechanics in order to help students better understand gait mechanics.

Paul Carpenter

Given a thimbleful of facts, it's remarkable how we will make a bathtub full of generalizations.

Dr. Carpenter completed his bachelor's degree (Hons) at Liverpool Polytechnic in the United Kingdom and his master's degree and PhD in Kinesiology at UCLA.  Dr. Carpenter has a wealth of administrative experience having served as a Department Chair for more than 20 years. He served in this role at University of East London in the United Kingdom and at Northern Illinois University in De Kalb, Illinois before coming to East Bay in 2014. Prior to taking the chair position at the University of East London, he was a faculty member at DeMontfort University in the United Kingdom for eight years.  

Dr. Carpenter also has a wealth of teaching experience having taught classes in research methods, sport psychology, sport management, physical education, and sport sociology in-person, online, and hybrid at both private and public universities in the United Kingdom and the United States. He also has a strong scholarly record and has published numerous articles and presented at many professional conferences primarily in the area of sport psychology with a particular focus on sport commitment.

In addition to his academic work, Dr. Carpenter practices what he preaches with respect to the importance of being physically active. He is an avid cyclist and competes in long distance endurance events. He commutes to work daily on his bike and has been doing so for over 30 years. Having grown up in England, football (soccer) is also his passion, and he plays in the university's intramural soccer league.

Common Questions

What type and how many credits will I obtain by taking the program?

California State University, East Bay uses a two semester system. For each course you complete, you will acquire two semester units.

What does the course fee include?
Course fees include all required course materials and exams, as well as access to one-on-one instruction via e-mail or phone.
What is the refund policy?

To withdraw from a course, you must submit a written request to the Continuing Education Office at ce.studentservices@csueastbay.edu. Failure to file a written request to withdraw may result in a failing grade. A stop payment order on a check does not constitute an official withdrawal, nor does it relieve your financial obligation for the course.

Refunds are given when the request is made in writing no later than three weeks after registration. There is a $50 administrative charge per course refunded. Therefore, $50 will be deducted from your registration fee if one course is refunded; $100 will be deducted for two courses refunded; and $150 will be deducted if three courses are refunded. No refunds will be given to any request received after the three-week mark.

What are the requirements for completing the class?
To successfully complete the program, you must complete the required reading, watch sports telecasts (or engage in sport competition or physical activity), and take the self-administered final exam through Canvas. If you choose to submit an essay, instructions are provided in the syllabus, which can be found in Canvas.

Transcript requests may be made by mail or online. All requests require that you provide your NetID, date of birth, date(s) of CSUEB attendance, and address where the transcript is to be sent. The institution's Kinesiology & Physical Education Department is one of the most highly regarded on the West Coast, and the Sport Performance Program instructors have more than 40 years of combined teaching experience in the field.
When is the deadline to submit the final exam and essay?
All exams and essays must be completed before the end of the current term for your grade to be recorded. If you fail to submit coursework by this date, you will receive a grade of "incomplete". If you require an extension, you have until one year to complete and submit coursework in order to receive a grade and course credit.
When will I receive the course materials?
Materials are accessible through the University’s learning management system, Canvas. Once you have completed registration and payment, you will be issued a NetID and password that you use to access Canvas.

Yes, this program qualifies for the Forever Pioneer discount for Cal State East Bay alumni. You can complete and submit the Forever Pioneer Registration Form to receive the discounted pricing. Advanced registration is required to qualify for the discount.
