Learn the legal issues around wages and hours in the workplace. Topics to be covered include: the law of overtime compensation and who is exempt from the overtime requirements, the interpretation of wage and hour regulations by the Department of Fair Employment, meal time and rest break requirements, remedies for not paying wages, and when class lawsuits will be permitted in wage/hour actions. Students will learn about the process of Labor Commission claims, lawsuits filed to recover past due wages, and the issue of when and how "commissions" are paid as wages. Strategies on avoiding exposure to wage/hour claims will also be covered.

This course will take place fully online, asynchronous (no scheduled meeting time). The students may move through the course materials via Canvas at their own pace. There are 6 hours of coursework videos, etc. to complete during the scheduled dates, Oct. 21, 2024 - Oct. 27, 2024 (starting Monday and ending on Sunday at 11:59pm).
