Renew Your Notary Commission and Take the Official Notary Exam This Secretary of State approved class will prepare you to take the exam again by reviewing all relevant Notary law. You will take the official notary exam directly following the class. Renewing Notaries are required to take the exam and be fingerprinted again. Your commission must be current to qualify. Please bring the following items required to take the exam: 1. Secretary of State Notary Exam Application (provided in class) 2. Proper ID, which may be one of the following: -State-issued Driver¿s license or ID card -Canadian or Mexican Driver¿s license -U.S. passport or a passport issued by a foreign government -U.S. military ID card 3. 2 x 2 color passport photo 4. Proof of Completion (Issued after class) Proofs are valid for two years for first time notaries. Renewing notaries must take the exam before their commission expires, otherwise they must take a six-hour seminar. 5. Check or money order for exam payable to the Secretary of State $40, retake fee $20. This fee is in addition to the class fee. 6. #2 pencil 7. Mask Must be 18+ years of age. Live Scan fingerprints are required to become a notary. Serious Convictions may disqualify applicants. Notaries are required to obtain a background check through livescan fingerprinting. This should be done after class so that the Secretary of State receives your application and exam scores first. You can find a local livescan operator through www.certifixlivescan.com. Call in advance and make an appointment. Bring a completed "Request for Livescan Form" to your appointment. The cost is generally $70 Here is the online link to complete and print. No one will be admitted after 12:30 p.m. Seminar: 12:45 pm to 4 pm Exam check-in: 4 pm to 5 pm Exam: 5 pm to 6 pm Must be at least 18 years of age. A serious conviction may disqualify an applicant. PLEASE NOTE: Arrive early. Due to State regulations, no one will be admitted to the classroom after 12:30 p.m. You must be on time when returning to the classroom from a break.
