This noncredit seminar introduces the paralegal profession and provides the student with an overview of the role of a paralegal, the professional responsibilities and opportunities for a paralegal, the organization and management of law offices, and the skills expected of a paralegal. In addition, the student will be introduced to: - The California and the Federal court systems - The differences between trial and appellate courts - The sources of law including the Constitution, common law and statutory law - The basic differences between criminal law and civil law - Essential legal vocabulary and symbols.

This is an online synchronous course with required Zoom class meetings that take place on two Monday evenings, starting 1/6 and ending on 1/13. The online class meetings are from 6-9:30 pm. The Zoom link will be posted to the course portal in Canvas and also emailed to students within 2 days of first class meeting. This course is required for students who are admitted to the Paralegal Studies certificate program and open to any individual who is not admitted to the Paralegal Studies certificate program who is interested in learning more about the profession.
